A new c-section product

I received an interesting email from Digital Influence Group, a social media agency that actively engages in online conversations on behalf of their clients -- in this case, Genzyme, the biotech firm. Here's what the email said: "Digital Influence has been "raising awareness about c-sections; particularly c-section related adhesions, for Seprafilm, an adhesion barrier manufactured by Genzyme which helps minimize the risk of forming adhesions following abdominal surgery. As a result of our research, we’ve found that few women are aware of this potential complication, and that even fewer know there are preventative measures that can be taken. We’ve put together a quick list of links on this topic at http://del.icio.us/adhesion_awarenesss to help spread awareness, and thought you might be interested in the content there as well."

Pinky, do you think it helps?

I am very aware a Seprafilm and have been investigatig it over the last couple of years. It was used on my Mother 2 years ago and because of a bad reaction to it Seprafilm caused her death. Look at FDA MAUDE reports for Seprafilm. It can cause many bad reactions. The Surgeon who used Seprafilm on my Mother said he "will never use Seprafilm again" and would make other Surgeons in his group aware. It would be a shame for a new mother to have to spend extra time in the hospital away from her baby due to a bad reaction to a product that is not nessesary. PLEASE beware of Seprafilm.

I think it is too soon to tell. I have not heard about bad reactions such as Carol has described.

I have also had a very bad reaction to Seprafilm. left me with very little intestine. Does anyone know of any successful lawsuits?

Jim,
I'm sorry to hear about your reaction to Seprafilm. What did your doctor say about it? Did you report it to the FDA? Adverse events need to reported to the FDA so that they're aware of the problem. You can make your own report on FDA.gov. The doctor is required to report all serious adverse events to the FDA, but they don't always do it. I would suggest you make your own report.

Laura: It has been pretty frustrating. Went in for adhesion removal...had previous multiple abdominal surgeries for cancer. Was told that Seprafilm would prevent further adhesions. Surgery was uneventful and seemed to be recovering...5 days post op my intestines had still not worked and they suspected further adhesions...after 12 days of ng tubes and vomiting, they went back in and found almost my entire intestine fused together...matted and impossible to separate. They removed all but 5 feet....spent the next 8 months on TPN feedings 12 hours a day through port in my chest...weened off as of November and had my port removed recently...lost a total of 65 lbs...I'm skinny but I'm making it. Doctors don't really seem to care because they continue to use Seprafilm. I heard that the same thing happened to a woman 7 months later in the same hospital

By the way...it was reported to Maude at FDA but it was really minimal...I should file my own report

Jim,
Your experience sounds very similar to my mother's. Please email me at Laura6320@msn.com. I would like to discuss this with you.

Jim,
Please go to the following blog:
Jaynesdays.blogspot.com
If you click on the March archive, you'll read about my family's experience. From this report, you will see that your experience with Seprafilm is very similar to my mother's experience with a medical device. It is unconscionable that anyone should have to go through what you and my mother went though. Please email me at Laura6320@msn.com
so that I can talk to you about this experience. I want you to know that you are not the only one who has gone through what you have gone through. It is terrible that your doctors have not stood behind you but, unfortunately, that is the nature or medicine in this day and age. The threat of medical malpractice looms over every doctor's head and, many times, you won't get the support that you need. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
